For a truck yard, affordable outdoor cameras need five things: an IP66 or IP67 housing, an operating temperature range that covers your worst week of the year, strong low-light performance with wide dynamic range and IR where lighting is poor, enough resolution at the gate to read a plate or a DOT number, and surge protection with properly rated outdoor cabling. A 5MP AI varifocal bullet such as the Sunell SN-IPR8056BZAN-Z (IP67, −40°F to 140°F, 120dB true WDR, 40m IR) handles dock doors, fence lines and parking rows at value-tier pricing. A truck yard is one of the more hostile environments you can ask a camera to work in. Wide open, poorly lit, freezing in February and radiating heat off asphalt in July. Long perimeters with no power nearby. Headlights sweeping across the frame at 3 a.m. Diesel exhaust, road salt, dust. And a lot of very expensive freight sitting still.
Meanwhile the economics of cargo theft have shifted in a way that changes how much a camera is worth. Verisk CargoNet recorded 677 supply chain theft incidents in the second quarter of 2026 — a 26% decline year over year — while estimated losses over the same period more than doubled, to $304.6 million. The average stolen load in the first half of 2026 was worth roughly $341,518. Across all of 2025, losses reached approximately $725 million, up 60% from 2024, on a virtually unchanged number of events.
Fewer thefts, much larger losses. Thieves are being more selective and going after higher-value freight, which means the cost of failing to prevent a single incident at your yard has gone up sharply. That is the number to hold in mind while reading a camera budget.
The good news is that specifying cameras for a yard is not mysterious. Our solution engineering team makes the same point about every environment: camera selection follows the required view and the operating conditions, not the industry on the sign out front. A camera that works on a dark apartment parking lot in Minnesota works on a dark truck yard in Minnesota. What changes is the geometry and the distances.
1. IP66 or IP67 weather resistance
This is the floor, not a premium feature. IP66 means protected against powerful water jets; IP67 adds full immersion resistance. In a yard, cameras get hit by driving rain, pressure washing and blowing dust. Anything below IP66 outdoors is a warranty claim waiting to happen.
Look for IK10 alongside it on any low-mounted camera. IK10 is vandal resistant, and it matters anywhere a camera is reachable from a trailer roof or a ladder.
2. An operating temperature range that covers your worst week
Specification sheets get skimmed here and it is a mistake. A camera rated to 14°F is fine in Georgia and useless in North Dakota. The Sunell outdoor models below are rated −40°F to 140°F, which covers essentially any yard in the continental U.S. at both ends.
Fog is a separate problem from temperature, and worth being precise about. A camera can be comfortably inside its operating range and still show you nothing, because condensation has formed on the glass. Two features address it: heated glass in the housing, and a defog mode in the image processing.
The Sunell PTZ in this guide has both. The fixed bullets do not have heated glass — they are rated for the cold and they keep working in it, but they have no active defogging. If your site fogs regularly, that is a reason to favour the PTZ for the positions that matter most, or to plan mounting so the housing sits under an overhang or out of the prevailing damp.
3. Low light, wide dynamic range, and IR when lighting is poor
Yards are usually lit badly and unevenly. Three specs address it:
4. Varifocal at fixed positions — and what varifocal does not do
A varifocal lens lets you adjust zoom and focus remotely after installation. That is worth real money in a yard, where mounting points sit high on poles and building corners and a service visit means a lift.
Be clear about the limit: a varifocal lens changes how far the camera sees, not where it is pointing. If the field of view is aimed wrong, somebody is still going up there to re-aim it. The cameras that can be repositioned remotely are PTZ and PTRZ, which add pan, tilt and rotation on top of zoom.
So: varifocal for fixed positions where you already know roughly where you want to look, and PTZ or PTRZ where the aim may need to change over time or where physical access is genuinely difficult.
5. Surge protection and properly rated outdoor cabling
The least interesting item on the list and the one that takes cameras offline. Long outdoor cable runs across an open yard act as antennas for electrical surges, and a nearby lightning strike will find them. Specify surge protection on outdoor runs and use cabling actually rated for outdoor and direct-burial use, not indoor cable pulled through conduit and hoped for.
Budget for it during the project. It is a rounding error against camera cost and it is the difference between a system that survives a summer storm season and one that does not.
This is where yards most often over-buy, so it is worth spelling out.
Reading a license plate or a DOT number is usually sold as a job for a dedicated LPR camera with recognition running on the camera itself. On the Cloudastructure platform it is not, because the recognition happens in our cloud AI rather than on the camera. Our most recent DOT number testing was done with a standard Sunell camera — nothing purpose-built for plate capture, no on-camera analytics involved.
What the camera has to deliver is the image. Enough resolution on the plate at the distance and speed involved, wide dynamic range for a backlit canopy and headlight glare, and low-light sensitivity for night arrivals. Get those right with a standard varifocal bullet and the reading is our problem rather than your hardware budget’s.
Where a step up earns its cost is margin. If the gate is your highest-value capture point, the Hanwha PNO-A9081RLP is built for vehicle capture at gated entrances and access roads at low-to-moderate speeds: 4K, 0.05 Lux color sensitivity, IR to 30m, 120dB WDR, plus a 32GB onboard SD card that buffers roughly 10,000 vehicle images if the network drops. More headroom in bad conditions, on the one position where a missed capture costs you most.
And if a single mounting point needs to cover both the gate lane and the adjacent yard, the Hanwha PNM-12082RVD puts two independently aimed 6MP sensors with motorized varifocal lenses in one housing — 120dB WDR, IR to 25m, IP66/IP67, IK10. One cable drop, two directions.
Cloudastructure does not manufacture cameras, and our platform works with the cameras you already own. But we get asked constantly what to buy when a yard is being built out or expanded. These are our solution engineering team’s recommendations, organized by where in the yard they go.
Fence lines, dock doors and parking rows — the workhorse
Sunell SN-IPR8056BZAN-Z, 5MP varifocal bullet. Value tier, and the camera most yards should buy the most of. 5MP at 30fps, 2.7–13.5 mm motorized varifocal, 120dB true WDR, Smart IR to 40m, IP67 and IK10, rated −40°F to 140°F. Cybersecurity is hardened — encrypted firmware, secure boot, 802.1X, AES-256 on the SD card — which matters on any network a corporate IT group has to sign off on.
Large open yards and lay-down areas — the long reach
Sunell SN-IPS8622YDR-Z25, 2MP 25× IR PTZ. Value tier, and it opens up applications that normally require premium hardware. 25× optical zoom (5–125 mm), IR to 200m, 360° endless pan, −15° to 90° tilt with auto-flip, 400 presets, heated glass with defog, IP66, rated −40°F to 140°F. Because it pans and tilts, it is also the answer where a fixed camera would need re-aiming over time.
One caveat, covered below: while a PTZ is zoomed in on one subject, it is not watching anything else. Pair it with a fixed wide-angle camera on the same area.
The gate
See the section above. A standard varifocal bullet handles it on this platform; the Hanwha PNO-A9081RLP is the step up where the gate is your most valuable capture point.
The practical strategy is hybrid. Put mid-range cameras at the highest-priority points — the gate, the fuel island, perimeter corners — and use value-tier cameras for general area coverage across the rest of the yard. Total cost lands well below an all-premium deployment and the coverage is better than a thin premium install, because coverage gaps are what actually get exploited.
Section 889 of the FY2019 National Defense Authorization Act restricts U.S. federal agencies and their contractors from using telecommunications equipment from a defined list of manufacturers. It is relevant if you are a federal agency, a recipient of federal grant funding, a government contractor or subcontractor, or a critical infrastructure operator under federal security requirements. A carrier hauling for a federal agency, or a facility built with DHS or FEMA grant money, should assume it applies.
Compliance is a model-by-model question, not a brand-by-brand one. Manufacturers build across multiple countries, and a company’s headquarters location tells you nothing reliable about where a particular camera was made. Ask your vendor for documented compliance on the specific SKU you are buying, not a general assurance about the brand.

Cameras document. Speakers prevent. When the average stolen load is worth over $340,000, that distinction is most of the return on the system.
Many cameras include built-in audio, but those speakers are small, power-constrained and designed for communication rather than deterrence — they cannot project across a yard. If you want to deter a thief or vandal, you’ll want a dedicated network horn.
The sequence that works: AI detects activity at the trailer line, a remote guarding agent reviews the feed in seconds, and the horn broadcasts clearly across the yard — “Attention, this is a secured area. You are being monitored by a live agent. Security is responding. Please leave immediately.” In most cases that ends the incident before anything is touched.

For remote corners of a yard, overflow lots, or areas where there is no building to mount to, Cloudastructure’s Powered Enclosure consolidates cameras, network and equipment into one weatherproof unit on a pole. It supports up to four PoE+ cameras and runs on solar or generator.
Being straightforward about the limitation, because it gets oversold in this category: a powered enclosure does not eliminate the need to plan how power and connectivity will reach that location. It consolidates the equipment and it removes the need for permanent wiring and trenching, but the power source and the connectivity path still have to be designed. Anyone who tells you a unit like this makes those questions disappear is selling you a surprise on install day.
Plenty of cameras on the market, including some of the models here, ship with on-board analytics. Cloudastructure does not use them. Our detection runs on NVIDIA GPU infrastructure in the cloud, and the camera’s job is to deliver a good image.
That is worth knowing before you pay for it. Camera AI chips are cost-constrained by design and the model is frozen at manufacture — it never improves. Cameras also cannot coordinate. If you have 80 cameras across three terminals, whose phone number goes in each one? What happens when that person is on vacation? If a camera at one yard flags a person of interest, how does a camera 300 miles away know to look for the same person? It cannot.
So buy cameras for the optics, the housing and the temperature rating. If a model carries a price premium specifically for on-board AI, that premium buys you nothing on this platform.
There is one exception, and it is worth being honest about it.
Following a moving subject has to happen at the camera, in the mechanism. So when a PTZ auto-tracks on a Cloudastructure deployment, it is using the camera’s own on-board tracking — we do not provide that function in our AI.
Two consequences worth knowing before you rely on it.
Auto-tracking reliability is a property of the camera you bought, not of our platform. Camera-side tracking does misfire: it locks onto movement that is not a subject of interest, and it sometimes fails to return to its home position. Test it on your actual camera, in your actual yard, before you build an operational procedure around it.
And this is true of every auto-tracking PTZ regardless of whose software is involved: while it is zoomed in following one truck, it is not watching the other nine acres. Always pair an auto-tracking PTZ with a fixed wide-angle camera covering the same area. That combination gives you situational awareness and close-up detail at the same time, and it is the single most useful pairing in a large yard.
A 360-degree view sounds ideal for a yard and usually is not. A fisheye spreads the same pixel count across a far wider area, so resolution per zone drops. For broad coverage at full resolution in every direction, a multi-sensor camera — independent imagers in one housing, each covering a quadrant — is the stronger choice.
Affordable does not mean underspecified. It means putting money where the environment demands it — the housing, the temperature rating, the dynamic range, the gate — and not paying for capability the yard will never use. On a cloud platform, on-camera AI is squarely in that second category.
Get the first list right and value-tier cameras will hold up in a yard for years. Get it wrong and expensive hardware fogs over, blows out in headlights, or quietly dies in a February cold snap.
And whatever you mount out there, the cameras are half of it. With the average stolen load now worth more than $340,000, detection has to reach a person who can act on it before the trailer doors open.
